Beer Braised Brats on a Burger Bun

  • 01 can of beer
  • 1/4 onion, chopped
  • 04 – 06 bratwursts
  • 01 onion, chopped
  • olive oil
  • 01 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • salt
  • pepper
  • coleslaw
  • American cheese slices
  • Thousand Island dressing
  • hamburger buns or other sandwich rolls
  • butter or oil for the buns

Add beer, 1/4 chopped onion and brats to a pan and simmer on low, covered for 10 – 15 minutes or until cooked through, flipping brats occasionally.
Discard beer and onions and transfer brats to a plate.
Heat some olive oil in the same pan.
Add onions, salt and pepper and sautee onions until soft.
Add balsamic vinegar and continue to cook until onions are caramelized.
Transfer to a plate and cover to keep warm.
Place the brats back in the pan and fry them until a nice brown on the outside. I like to cut my brats in half long-wise to get a crisp on the inside also.
Meanwhile, slightly butter or oil the buns and place them on a griddle until toasted.
As soon as buns are toasted, place some caramelized onions on the bun followed by a slice of American cheese so the cheese starts to melt slightly.
Top with Thousand Island dressing, the brats and a scoop of coleslaw.
Grab five or sick napkins and dig in!

  1. Sounds great. I’ve had a bunch of brats this week, but not in a sandwich. Check my site tomorrow for a cheddar brat recipe (I still have to write it up). I bet you could take the meat and instead of stuffing it into casing, form a bratwurst patty for your sandwich.
